Sue Williamson
The Last Supper, 1981
On the eve of Eid-Al-Fitr in 1981, Naz Gool-Ebrahim received her eviction notice, unleashing a flood of grief and anger. Her response—writing ‘Welcome to the Last Supper’ in the entrance hall of Manley Villa and inviting guests to inscribe their emotions on the walls —transformed the space into a raw testament of collective loss. At the time, Williamson was collecting rubble from the demolition sites of District Six for an installation at the Gowlett Gallery. She adopted the name ‘The Last Supper’ for her exhibition. Surrounding the rubble, six dining room chairs borrowed from the Ebrahim family were draped with white sheets, while a haunting soundscape of bulldozers, muezzin calls, and voices from the past filled the air.
