The Modderdam Postcards
The Modderdam Postcards were made during the 1977 forced removals near Cape Town’s airport, in an effort to halt the demolition of squatters’ homes in Modderdam. The sketches, made on-site, document the destruction as it occurred over seven days. These drawings were later reproduced as postcard-sized etchings which carry hand-written messages that mimic the language of state officials, underscoring the cruelty of the moment.
